SAN DIEGO – San Diego Councilmember Vivian Moreno (District 8) has issued the following statement from today’s press conference with a coalition of leaders in La Mesa:

“As we mourn the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, and so many other injustices throughout our country, we must continue to advocate for police reform. It is our obligation as leaders not just to mourn, but to listen and then to act. If we don’t act, if we don’t change our policies, then all this suffering will be in vain. The good news is that change has already begun.

Last year, Assemblywoman Shirly Weber passed her landmark bill, AB 392 that reformed law enforcement’s use of force standard in the State of California.

On Monday, San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit announced that the chokehold will no longer be used by San Diego Police Department. This an excellent, long-overdue, first step, but more must be done.

Accountability for law enforcement is more necessary than ever, which is why I support the Independent Commission on Police Practices Charter Amendment for the City of San Diego, and I look forward to placing it on the ballot in November. I also renew my call for a comprehensive de-escalation policy and training for the San Diego Police Department.

I will continue to support the reform efforts of my colleague Councilmember Monica Montgomery and the work of the City of San Diego’s Public Safety Committee.”
