SAN DIEGO – Today, the California–Baja California 2021 Border Master Plan (BMP) update was presented at the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) Joint Meeting of the Borders Committee and the Committee on Binational Regional Opportunities.
The BMP will be used to improve binational planning and coordination of projects and programs along the California-Baja California border. Caltrans developed the 2021 BMP in partnership with the State of Baja California Secretariat of Infrastructure, Urban Development, and Territorial Reorganization. The planning process involves nearly 40 agencies from the United States and Mexico at the federal, state, regional, and local levels. The U.S.–Mexico Joint Working Committee, led by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration and Mexico’s Secretariat of Communications and Transportation, provided leadership for the effort.
“The Border Master Plan (BMP) update strengthens and harmonizes the infrastructure planning efforts in the California and Baja California border region,” said Borders Committee Vice Chair and Councilmember Vivian Moreno. “The Story Map included in the BMP is a cutting edge and innovative web-based tool, rich in data, maps, information, and links to projects which are important to use when speaking with legislators and other stakeholders in Washington DC and Mexico City to understand the importance and challenges of the border region.”
The BMP study officially kicked off in January 2020 and was completed in February 2021. Caltrans plans to convene annual meetings of BMP agencies to help strengthen binational collaboration and coordination and to advance border projects. More info on the BMP can be found here.
