The San Diego Housing Shortage

The housing crisis is one of the central challenges of our generation, especially in coastal California cities like San Diego.

I believe that it will take all levels of government working together with the private sector to fix this problem and I am committed to ensuring that the city continues to do its part.

We have to continue the planning, zoning, and regulatory reforms to promote housing construction. Our record of reform at the city is one of the few bright spots in housing policy in the State.

As chair of the Land Use and Housing Committee in 2019, I pushed forward extensive reforms to parking regulations, including zero parking minimums citywide within Transit Priority Areas.

I supported the Complete Communities Housing Reforms in 2020 at the San Diego City Council.

I supported significant upzoning in multiple community plan updates including the Mission Valley Community Plan Update, the Balboa Specific Plan and the Morena Blvd Specific Plans.

Homeownership for First Time Homebuyers

Homeownership strengthens neighborhoods and it provides a foundation of wealth for a family.

I am currently working with Mayor Todd Gloria and the Housing Commission on the Middle-Income First-Time Homebuyer program to help families making 80% to 120% of AMI with home buying assistance.

Supportive Housing for Those Experiencing Homelessness

Together with Father Joe’s Villages, Chelsea Investment Corp. and the San Diego Housing Commission, we opened Benson Place which provides 82 units of supportive housing for people experiencing homelessness.
